Music in Typography Study 20

Description

This is one of a big series of studies of how I can take a poem I wrote about the sound of a marimba and turn it into expressive typography. Some of these studies are simpler than others. Some are more complex than others. Some are meant to be illegible or hard to read. Some are meant to be legible and easy to read. Some more colorful and some more dull. These studies were done in two different formats: a rectangle and a square.

"She sat quietly before me without a single note. She was beautiful. Her skin glistened like polished rosewood. The frame of her body held her structure so perfectly.

They told me she could speak in many tongues. She knew the voice of time and space itself. She knew everything. Her majestic appearance had me in a trance, completely speechless, as if she'd stolen my tongue. They asked me to go play with her. I grew nervous; unsure. They told me the yarn mallets were the only way to break the spell.

As I shyly approached the shining goddess, I felt her aura grow then quickly thin as I reached her. It was as if she was calling to me. I pulled the mallets out of her pocket and stood before her with great anticipation. Then suddenly, as if she had possessed me, I slowly began to play.

I very lightly tapped her shoulder and she spoke for the first time. I did it again; she spoke a little louder. Her voice began to rise. It was as if she were singing for me. Her chant echoed with a deep and earthy sound more grand than anything I had ever heard. It rang out so gracefully as the mallets glided up her octaves. Her song still resonates softly in my heart."
